Oh lordy lord lorderson. What more beautiful way to roll into a Sunday than with some outstanding preview trailers?
So very charged for this bunch. Catch the videos below!
Stranger Things, Season 2
Like everybody else my age (I hope), I thrilled to binge my way through a whole series of an exceptional show that pulled all the right nostalgia strings for a kid of the ’80s. It looks like Season 2 is going to push that strategy into overdrive!
Star Trek: Discovery
The most revealing trailer yet for the new and so very long-awaited Trek TV series: Discovery.
I’ve been a fan of Star Trek since the ’90s (and a bit before that, courtesy of catching old reruns on TV with my dad), but the franchise has always been a love/hate thing for me. So many incredible episodes, but so many dumb filler eps that made no sense for me. Likewise, so many good movies, but a few too many average ones.
Frankly, while I enjoy the spectacle, I’m not at all a fan of the new ‘Abramsverse’ films. But, it looks like this new show will walk the line between the original universe and Abrams’ films (I’m not 100% clear on the timeline being used in Discovery), and I’m holding out hope for an enjoyable run!
Ready Player One
Loved the book, and this film adaptation looks suitably epic.
Whether he’s merely profiting off nostalgia, or reliving his own favourite memories (whynotboth.jpg), Ernest Cline has a real flair for tapping into those ’80s feels – just like Stranger Things – while thrusting us into a convincing and thrilling near future obsessed with VR and the hunt for an almost literal virtual oasis.
Some great pop-culture cameos in the trailer, too: The Iron Giant, Kaneda’s motorbike from Akira, the Back to the Future DeLorean… did I miss any? And presumably these are all Warner Bros properties (licensed, in the case of Akira). Hopefully we see some others from without the WB stable!
I still haven’t seen Wonder Woman, but I’m advised it’s great fun. That’s good to hear, because little else from the DC world has entertained me on the big screen in recent years…
This does look pretty damn mighty, though. Hoping for the best!
Marvel: The Defenders
I’m so very behind on all of Netflix’s Marvel shows. I didn’t bother with Iron First, I’m only part way through season 2 of Daredevil, I didn’t enjoy Jessica Jones enough to finish it (the inconsistency in her powers bugged me), Luke Cage is one I intend to finish…
But, this does look fun. I do love a good ensemble hero story. In team we trust!
The total, epic change in tone we were shown in the last Thor 3 trailer was pretty confronting – mostly because I simply hadn’t been expecting it – but damn it does look good. Planet Hulk!
This is really turning into one big nostalgia fest, isn’t it? Nostalgia is so hot right now!
Very excited for the reborn DuckTales series, especially the really simplistic, almost vintage art style. A great cast, too!
Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling
Wow, speaking of nostalgia! This was so unexpected. Am I just out of the loop? Maybe… either way, hot damn.
This show was a massive fave for me as a young’n, and now we’re getting a “holy crap we’re in the 21st century” one-off special? Sign me up.
WestWorld, Season 2
Ah man. WestWorld took me a long time to get into, but once I sucked down a handful of episodes, I was hooked. Really pumped for this robot uprising!
Pacific Rim: Uprising
Lastly, because my cousin Rahart Adams is in it, I’m sharing this one. I didn’t love the first film, but it was definitely pretty amazing to look at.
The jaegers look a lot more athletic now, more clearly inspired by Japanese anime – which is as it should be! So I’ll definitely be giving this a go.
What are you most pumped for out of all of these?
I left a few off my list, too… is there anything not listed here that you’re really looking forward to out of this weekend’s Comic-Con announcements and big reveals?
